Reporting to the Board of Directors, the General Director provides for the overall leadership of this $5.4 million company, with responsibility for creative and operational aspects of administration and production. The General Director is the primary leader in artistic planning, fund-raising, building relationships with individuals and organizations in the community, and fulfilling the mission of the company.

Opera Omaha is known for its diverse and artistically excellent programming and its commitment to dismantling racism and its structures through the art form of Opera. It serves its community through a main stage season at the Orpheum Theatre, as well as free programming, educational initiatives, and exciting events in approachable spaces through the Holland Foundation Community Fellowship Program, the ONE Festival, and Amplifying the Black Experience project.

Opera Omaha:
Stepping down after eleven seasons, current General Director Roger Weitz is proud to have nurtured a legacy of innovation and artistic success. Under his leadership, the
company presented 25 new/original productions. The number of community, education, and engagement programs increased exponentially. In addition, season subscribers, the endowment, the budget, and audiences all increased under his guidance. Innovations include the ONE Festival (a city-wide event celebrating new work and contemporary artists), the Holland Community Opera Fellowship program, and Amplifying the Black Experience. The Holland Fellows are entrepreneurial artists,
based in Omaha, who help build meaningful relationships with community organizations, schools, health and other service providers. Amplifying the Black
Experience was created with the vision to honor, celebrate and bring awareness to the local Black community through art, music, and multi-media.

Founded in 1958, Opera Omaha’s mission is to enrich the quality of life in its community by creating professional opera and music theater. Opera Omaha forges opera’s rich storytelling power, historical significance, and cross-cultural relevance into an array of
activities.

Opera Omaha is a growth-minded and innovative company with a demanding mission: producing opera performances in multiple formats and styles, and co-creating artist-led programs for a variety of community service organization. Opera Omaha is financially stable with an engaged and financially supportive board. It has produced more than 150 opera productions overall. It annually produces three
operas in the beautifully restored 2600-seat historic Orpheum Theatre (Rapp& Rapp, 1927); the 2022/23 season will include Anthony Davis’s X: LIFE AND TIMES OF
MALCOLM X; Opera Omaha was the second collaborator on this exciting project, now including other major opera companies. Opera Omaha has a long and close relationship with the Omaha Symphony.

Omaha: The City
The largest city in the state of Nebraska, Omaha is located on the Missouri River. It is a wonderful place to live; and a wonderful place to raise a family. Centrally located, both the east and west coasts are easily accessible within a few hours. It is home to headquarters of four Fortune 500 companies: Berkshire Hathaway, Peter Kiewit & Sons, Mutual of Omaha, and Union Pacific. In recent decades, Omaha’s downtown and riverfront have had major transformative investments, from new office towers to adaptive reuse of many existing structures. Nearing completion this summer is the first of three parts of a public park, a science museum, and performance spaces downtown and on the riverfront. Consistent with Omaha’s history of public philanthropy, most of the funding for these projects comes from Omaha’s corporations and charitable foundations. The city has a strategic plan for its urban core, which aims to reaffirm and reinforce the urban core’s historic role as the cultural, entertainment, residential and employment heart of the region. This plan includes a streetcar system which will pass directly by Opera Omaha’s home base at the Orpheum Theatre.

The Position:
The General Director is the executive officer of Opera Omaha reporting to the Board of Directors. The General Director is responsible for artistic direction and overall
organizational management. Specific responsibilities include the oversight of fund-raising, strategic planning, opera production, digital initiatives, fiscal stewardship, and community relations, including DEI programs.

Opera Omaha has a strong management leadership team, with several offering long experience and talent.

We seek a dynamic, charismatic leader who will build on the company’s solid foundation and reputation while attracting ever greater public support.  The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to emerging artists, excellent artistic standards, digital creation, and selling such a vision to the community. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of effective leadership, fiscal responsibility, and fund-raising, with a strong commitment to our community and educational partnerships.

The General Director is expected to maintain a profile as a leader of the opera industry and should foster a strong presence in Omaha. The position requires the ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with artists, board members, community leaders, administrative and artistic staff, foundations, artists’ managers,
corporate and individual donors, the operatic community, the media, and the audience.   A strong contact network throughout the opera industry is vital. In particular, the next General Director should have an industry profile that will enable the candidate to build on Weitz’s leadership in bringing the most exciting and innovative directors, designers, and composers to Opera Omaha.

Education and Experience:
Training in both opera and business management would be helpful, as well as prior experience in opera company leadership, knowledge of the repertoire, and general
knowledge of not-for-profit arts revenue generation (subscription and single ticket sales, all aspects of fund-raising), strategic and operating planning, budget development, DEI initiatives, office administration, board relations and governance, information systems, digital strategies, and human resource management.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, inspire enthusiasm, and be comfortable in the role as key spokesperson for the company.

Compensation: $142,500 – $165,000 annually with excellent benefits and a relocation package.
